How it all Started

It all started at the XXIV National conference of IAP at Madras in 1987. During the general body meeting of the conference the idea of starting a National IAP respiratory chapter was conceived. The same was proposed by Dr. MD Shah (Bombay), seconded by Dr. H Paramesh (Bangalore) & Dr. N Somu (Madras). It was decided to have the founding office at Bombay with Dr. MD shah as its chairperson with the approval of Central IAP National president Dr. AB Desai. Founding members were enrolled the very same day to mark the beginning of the chapter. During the same conference Pediatric Hematology/Oncology chapter too was conceived and Dr. T. Dorairajan was elected unanimously as its president.

First Milestone Commencement

The chapter had its teething issues and after an initial lull, the chapter was formally commenced in 1989 with Dr. MD Shah as its founding chairperson and Dr. Keya R Lahiri as its secretary. The very first annual conference of IAP respiratory chapter was held at Mumbai in 1989 with around 150 delegates and the second annual conference was conducted in 1990 at the world university service center at Chennai with an overwhelming participation of 250 delegates. Since then the national conference of IAP respiratory chapter had become a permanent fixture in the last quarter of each year and has been conducted across various cities in India. The chapter had a steady growth and as its first milestone, received its first best chapter award of the central IAP in 1996 under the Madras team of Dr Somu, Dr L Subramanyam & Dr A Balachandran.
